What We Cover

Birds

Birds have been kept as pets for thousands of years in cultures all over the world. Common varieties include cockatiels, parakeets (or budgies), parrots , and cockatoos. Birds make ideal pets for people living in smaller spaces, like apartments, and for people looking for pets that are relatively low maintenance.

Cats

Cats are the second-most popular pets by number of households – but because cat owners usually have more than one, there are more cats than dogs in the United States. Cats are a popular choice because they are relatively easy to care for and, despite the stereotype, can be very affectionate and friendly towards their owners.

Dogs

Unsurprisingly, dogs are one of the most popular pets in the United States, and are the most common pet among all pet-owning homes. Popular breeds include Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, beagles, bulldogs, and German shepherds

Ferrets

A ferret may seem like an unusual choice for a new pet,but the intelligent, curious creatures have been used as pets as far back as the ancient Egyptians. Even Queen Victoria of England used to give them away as gifts to visiting royalty. Ferrets make exciting pets, but can be high maintenance, as they require a great deal of care, training, and attention

Freshwater Fish

Fish can be one of the most low-maintenance types of pets. Freshwater fish are easier to care for than their saltwater cousins, and in general, live longer and healthier lives. Goldfish are the most famous type of freshwater pet, but there are hundreds of varieties to choose from, including discus, gourami, betta fish, and guppies. Some fish, like pleco, can even help.
keep their tank clean by eating algae!

Gerbils

Gerbils are fun, relatively low-maintenance pets that thrive in dry, hot environments, and unlike hamsters, are most active during the day. They are also not as expensive as larger pets, like a cat or dog. However, they do still require regular care, and there is a very small risk of them carrying salmonella, which can be dangerous to children or those with weakened.

Guinea Pigs

Guinea pigs make great pets for almost anyone, and are among the most friendly and playful types of pet rodents. They also live long lives for their size – an average of five to seven years, and sometimes as high as the teens. However, they do require daily attention and their cage needs to be cleaned regularly, so new owners should be prepared for that time.
commitment.

Hamsters

Hamsters are popular for their small size and playful nature, but what many people don’t know before they purchase one is that hamsters are nocturnal creatures who are most active at night. This may be disappointing if you were hoping to play with it during the day, but for night owls, a cute, energetic hamster can make a perfect pet.

Horses

A horse can be one of the most rewarding animals to keep – provided you have the room! A horse obviously needs lots of space, care, and attention, can require a significant amount of training, and are prone to leg fractures and laminitis (hoof swelling). However, they are intelligent, long-lived creatures that can bring a great deal of joy and companionship to their owners.

Iguanas

Iguanas are one of the most popular lizards people buy as pets, although they are no longer considered a “fad” pet like they were a few decades ago. They can be a little higher maintenance than most new owners expect, requiring a balanced diet of leafy greens, fruit, and calcium. They also need to be properly trained, or they may become aggressive. With proper care, however, iguanas can make loyal friends.

Mice

Mice have been kept as pets for hundreds of years, and make great companionships. First time mouse owners should choose a female mouse over a male, as female mice tend to be friendlier and have a better temperament. They are very energetic and playful, so make sure to include some toys in their cage!

Saltwater Fish

Many people love to keep saltwater fish in their homes due to their relatively low maintenance and beautiful appearance. There are many varieties of saltwater fish that can be kept as pets – even eels and sharks! – but for beginners, clownfish, blenny, damselfish, and goby are good options.

Snakes

They may make some people squeamish, but snakes can make excellent pets! They are easy to feed and care for, long-lived, and are generally not aggressive (especially beginner breeds like the corn snake, kingsnake, and Ball python). Like most animals, snakes dislike large crowds and loud noises, and they love routine, so make sure to change their water.
and feed them at around the same time regularly.

Turtles

Turtles (and their dry land cousins, tortoises) can live for over 25 years, so make sure you’re ready for that commitment! Luckily, they are generally very easy to care for, provided you clean and maintain their cage regularly. Turtles, like most reptiles, can carry salmonella, so always wash your hands after handling them.
